Going for gold...

IIPM PUBLICATION

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s (ADAG) investment product distribution arm, Reliance Money, is going to retail its very own brand of gold coins; these gold coins will be made by the Swiss company, Valcambi. With this, ADAG, becomes the first non-banking private sector company to retail gold coins in the Indian market. The 24-carat 999.9 pure gold coins (with certification of purity from Valcambi) will be available in sizes of 5 grams and 8 grams at the Reliance Money and Reliance World outlets (of Reliance Communications). This Ambani, most definitely, believes in keeping his hands full of gold.

The Senator's attempts to restore faith in freedom should be welcomed
The Cheney-led Bush administration cannot be allowed to subvert the American democracy any longer. And it is precisely the spirit that has led the Democrat, Dennis Kucinich (in the race for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination), to introduce a legislation (House Resolution 333) to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney for, allegedly, fabricating and deliberately manipulating the intelligence to launch the war on Iraq. Cheney has undermined democratic institutions, but now the US public is rising against injustice. Dennis says, "Something has to be done to reclaim our country's goodness, to reclaim a government that American people want to be honest, want to be just."

The other charges against Cheney include putting the lives of US soldiers in danger, holding him responsible for loss of 3,300 American lives in Iraq. Cheney is also blamed for violating the constitution by insinuating a likely war against Iran. Another serious charge against Cheney is that he has caused an irreparable damage to the US image through his misdemeanours. On April 28 'impeach rallies' were organized across the US. Eileen McCabe, a noted peace activist & national delegate of the Green Party, told B&E, "I believe that people are realising that staying on the course, when it’s the wrong course, can be disastrous. It is also a demonstration of perseverance in not selling out your values. Standing up against the powerful also shows the virtue of real courage."

The US public, saturated with lies perpetrated by self-seeking politicians, is beginning to pay attention to Albert Einstein’s suggestion, "This disgrace to civilisation should be done away with, at once... senseless violence and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism." Wish Cheney had read it much earlier!

Is it too late to save the earth?

It can easily be professed as the most common attribute of the human hypocrisy. On one hand, we just don’t stop complementing our technical virtuosos for their mind-boggling inventions, and on the contrary, we don’t miss a blink before blaming those very inventions for all the ill consequences that we are facing. Be it the pressing problem of global warming issue, the perils of pollution or the never ending issue of energy shortages, without any fail we blame our tech innovators for these natural hazards. However, in the due course, we fail to see the other side of the coin. We just ignore the kind of effort that is being put in by the scientists and engineers, who constantly endeavour to tackle these hazards and provide us with a greener and cleaner future. Agreed that currently available green technologies are not capable enough to keep the earth greener and safer, but global scientists are definitely not leaving any stone unturned in their efforts to develop technologies which will save earth from its current and futuristic hazards.

'General'ly 'Spark'ling motors

IIPM PUBLICATION

Being overridden by Toyota in the quarterly sales globally, General Motors has everything but given up. Entering the small-car segment, GM offloaded its small car Chevrolet Spark in India. Spark comes in four models and its base model is tagged at Rs.3,09,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), which is quite attractively priced for this segment. The car will be pitched against Maruti’s Wagon R, the newly launched Zen Estilo and Hyundai’s Santro, and might get sales figures soaring for GM as it aims for a 10% market share by 2010 in the country from the current 2.8% share.

4Ps Release :- Marketers or devil’s advocate?

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

It’s not that these companies are unaware of the damages and harmful effects of their products. They are as aware as tobacco companies are about the nicotine content in cigarettes. The 1999 film, The Insider, showed it all, when one of the employees of the company Philip Homes acted as a whistleblower and spilled the beans on a popular TV show called, 60 Minutes. It showed that tobacco companies intentionally targeted children and concealed the addictive nature of cigarettes. Thanks to him, Minnesota became the first state in USA to file an antitrust and consumer fraud lawsuit against the tobacco industry forcing the company to pay $6.1 billon as settlement charges – which is a helluva lot of money! Come to think of it, for years, the American Tobacco Company argued that “cigarette smoking is not injurious to health!”

Khan: Brazil, not India, making waves!

IIPM PUBLICATION

O&M’s Piyush Pandey appears less euphoric & more realistic. “Our advertising has certainly come of age when you compare it to the average quality of advertising on TV across the globe. Our stuff is certainly better & more interesting than most others. However, it is that top 5% where we have to break into.”

The mustachio dada believes that we are still evolving and we have some ground to cover. In the West, some commercials are made at a budget that would exceed the entire media budget of some of our biggest spenders! Our talent lies in maximizing results from minimum resources – no mean feat. “Everything considered, our recent performances at global forums and meets, the spark and quality of ideas from our youngsters and general standard of work produced has certainly created a buzz and expectation internationally. We have made our entry and we need to translate that expectation delivers outstanding work on a regular basis – something I am confident we can do!”

What are you surfing in office?

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Pix Alert is a company that specialises in the prevention of illegal and pornographic images on personal computers. A study conducted by PixAlert has set alarm bells ringing all over cyberspace and in the corporate world: The study says that 25% of corporate PCs have pornographic material, and of these, nearly 47% of the images showed full nudity or sexual activity. Here’s how the pornographic pattern played out, while 45% of the offending images came from e-mails, 35% of the images were downloaded online. The study was conducted taking into account auditing of about 10,000 personal computers (in 125 businesses and public networks). Andy Churley, a director at PixAlert, has said in a statement that, “With over a third of all images found created in the last 12 months, it is clear that a significant number of employees continue to ignore corporate policies and, in some cases, are going to extraordinary lengths to bypass protection systems in order to obtain and distribute inappropriate material... Corporate officers wrongly assume that boundary protection systems stop all digital pornography from entering the organisation but, in PixAlert’s experience, almost all corporations will have a significant amount of pornography on their networks.”

The Quest For Magic

IIPM PUBLICATION

Variety, they say, is the spice of life. And ever since a plethora of QSRs from across the world have set up shop, the Indian palate is no longer constrained to the realms of ethnic, home cooked cuisine. With a slew of customized product & pricing strategies & an armoury of aggressive expansion plans, all they want to communicate to the nation is – Bon Appétit!

It’s an evening in the indomitable Gaulish village and the brave Gaul Asterix is keenly waiting for a sip of the potion with his best pal Obelix for company. The druid Getafix is busy blending different herbs to inject that special magic into the concoction, which gives the Gauls superhuman powers and helps them surmount every challenge that confronts them. This magic potion in Rene Goscinny & Albert Uderzo’s comics never fails.

Cut to the 21st century India, where there is a 300 –millionplus middle class. And the growing breed of druids (read Quick Service Restaurants) in the country are also groping for the magical formula, the right combination of ingredients, which will enable them to conquer the market. For them, satiating the Indian palate is no less exciting than an Asterix-style adventure, which they would hope also ends the same way (with ceremonial feasting & celebrations), as every Asterix adventure does.

Is the future perfect for the Future Group? Really?

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

The earliest bird which got hooked onto the retail rush... But this first-mover has not got cornered. Is the future perfect for the Future Group? Really?

Betonville Beast’s finally in town... And just as the Waltons have been the ‘feared’ lot amongst the global retail fraternity, India too of late has understandably rediscovered the secret of big bucks behind the retail business.

The non-stop retail revolution which is currently sweeping across the nation, with biggies like the Ambanis, Tatas, Bhartis and several other blue-eyed boys of India Inc. suddenly finding themselves all braced-up for riding the retail wave. While the new players are laying out big plans for the assault, the home-grown retail rodeo – Kishore Biyani is fast ramping up his act with newer ventures. Bold moves yes, but risky nevertheless, and without a sturdy base. For sure, the risk of spreading too thin can be hazardous!

Hope floats on ‘air’, in a war-torn land...

IIPM PUBLICATION

The Motherland is forever an object of veneration, however bathed in illicit doctrines of delusion by rebel factions and oft en founding fathers alike it may be. In these entities, to which countrymen profess their unbridled patriotism, there ironically emanates burning desire for bloodshed, a craving to kill and to blur the very horizon with a crimson hue; assuming frequently the form of mutineer blocs and civil wars. The eighties converging into the late nineties suffice for some of the ghastliest, most gory decades to have ever blotched erstwhile South American colonies, once a seat of the mighty Inca rulers. And though sporadic coups have been triumphantly repressed by successive, dwindling governments, and at most sporadic in recent years, it’s the memory of the tumultuous past that hovers like a shadow in their denizens’ subconscious. Peruvian-American Daniel Alarcòn, in his brilliant first long-format endeavour, Lost City Radio, appears to bear deep impression from such subconscious blemishes that eventually play the imperceptible protagonist in his narrative, lurking beneath the characters, backdrop and the story.

The giant bear hug!

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Besides DLF, there is still a significant amount of money expected to be raised through real estate IPOs this year. Quoting industry figures, Madhur Mittal, JMD, Triveni Infrastructure Development Company spoke exclusively to B&E, “Real estate companies are to raise Rs.16,000 crore in 2007 through IPOs... number of real estate companies seeking IPOs this year has also doubled to around 150.”

In the past year, the Indian real estate sector has seen many a fortune being built. So much so that four of the seven new Indian entrants in the Forbes Billionaire List, 2006 are from the real estate sector alone. But there was a heightened concentration risk, as RBI was of the opinion that too much of bank lending is going towards the real estate sector. As disclosed by one of the highest ranking RBI officials directly to B&E, the Government was also overtly concerned about “too much of money chasing too few assets,” which leads to creation of asset bubble.

Stop counting Gs!

MANAGEMENT GURU

Amidst all the excitement however, 4G still has to battle the traces of wariness that lingers mainly because of technological, operational and legal roadblocks and Alok Shende, VP, Frost & Sullivan, expressed his doubt about 4G while speaking to B&E as, “Irrespective of the technology. It is the laying down of a good eco-system that makes it succeed whether it is high speed, good price points or acceptability in the world market – all of which give 3G and WiMAX an upperhand over 4G. While 3G is accredited based on set standards, 4G lacks such backing. Technologies are based on standards which evolve. While 2G, 2.5G, 3G are all based on accreditations from standards, 4G is more of a hype or misconception!” This was further confirmed by Neha Gupta, Sr. Research Analyst, Gartner India who said, “4G is still in the embryonic stage.” While 4G may allow intensive multimedia usance, its supporting back-up technologies fail to meet the massive capacity needed.

(Glen)Marking a European presence

MANAGEMENT GURU

Mumbai-based pharmaceutical major, Glenmark, has acquired over 90% stake in Medicamenta of Czech Republic, marking its first commercial foray in the lucrative European market. The deal was sealed by its Swiss subsidiary, Glenmark Holdings SA, and the presence of Medicamenta's sales and marketing arm in both Czech Republic and Slovakia, would provide added opportunities for Glenmark. Reportedly, Glenmark shelled out $12-13 million for the acquisition. Meanwhile, without wasting much time, Glenmart Pharmaceuticals has also announced plans to launch 10-15 new generic drugs in next 2-3 years as it looks out for more companies (as big as Medicamenta) to acquire.

Ed, not yet

MANAGEMENT GURU

It’s a bloody well-made movie. On the technical front, the editing Oscar nom is great too, but what about direction? After all, if Leo picks up the golden statuette, he’ll have Ed Zwick to thank and not Martin Scorcese! A tale of a soldier of fortune, a farmer estranged from his family and tuxedoed treacherous traders of diamonds in the trail of a big pink rock, set pace in strifetorn Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond unleashes violence – lots of it – but in a style very different from the usual harrowing depiction, what Zwick himself disproves as “violence imagined as pornography”. He should be back soon.

Scouting for such a version is only a logical step forward for the CAC’s ambition to develop a 5th generation machine

MANAGEMENT GURU

To our credit, as of now, there is the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter that is undergoing user trial that can be considered a truly 5th generation product & not an extension of the four & half generation F-18 Hornett. By entering into serious discussion about the 5th generation with Russians, our government (for a change) has stated its intent to be strategically pro-active, & at the tactical level, fill the air superiority deficit, which plagues the IAF. Even on the front of internalizing technology, Russia has been more than eager to find a partner in India for defence co-production. Interestingly, if India had backed out, the next obvious choice would have been China. The Chinese Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) has been showing major interest in the thrust vectored version of the Russian AL- 31FN engine, which powers the J-10 series. Scouting for such a version is only a logical step forward for the CAC’s ambition to develop a 5th generation machine. Frankly, there wasn’t much option left for India.

Global moves

IIPM PUBLICATION

They are going global...

The foray of the Indian Railways into Sri Lanka where it would construct a 160 km rail network between Colombo and Matara is a big step forward for the Indian government-owned organisation. For the past 16 years, since India started integrating with the rest of the world’s economy, India Inc. companies have ventured much beyond the boundaries to test the unknown waters. But the Indian PSUs, except for ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL), have failed miserably to mark a footprint abroad. Indian Railways’ endeavour might just be the step in the right direction. The Indian Railways, Department of Posts or PSUs like BHEL, NTPC, and SAIL have the right kind of expertise and experience that oft en becomes the very platform for a global expedition. The Indian Railways has been managing one of the largest networks in the world for many decades, ferries nearly 6 billion passengers, and around 750 million tonne freights per year and runs more than 14,000 trains per day. Yet, it had never thought to encash this know-how for bigger feats. And on goes the same story for many of the other PSUs as well.

So far so good. But it should neither stop with Sri Lanka nor be the exclusivity of Indian Railway. Most PSUs have the ability to make it global in the same manner, in which, Ranbaxy, Reliance or Tatas have made it. All they need is to think beyond!! Anybody listening??

Branding HR

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Yet another pressure on HR has been to brand itself effectively. Titles like ‘Best Employers,’ ‘Best places to work’ are quite a lure for any business. However, to achieve one, the whole HR function needs to be robust and totally connected to its people, which is not possible as long as the function keeps dealing with problem-solving and other administrative issues.

That apart, it is not only enough to brand yourself within the organization but also outside the organisation. All of this calls for consistent and progressive performance, so as to raise standards and set benchmarks above the industry standards. Here too, an HRIS can help the management by providing access to relevant, accurate and timely information about its employees at any given point in time. It can also clearly demarcate the productivity improvement over a period of time, and link the output with specific initiatives undertaken towards that end.

The AXA effect!

IIPM PUBLICATION

After storming the telecom sector, Bharti Group decided to test the waters of the booming insurance sector in India. In August 2005, Bharti formed a joint venture with AXA Asia Pacific Holdings Limited to form Bharti AXA Life Insurance Company Limited. As part of the agreement, Bharti holds a 74% equity stake in the JV, while the rest is held by AXA. Though the company was formed in 2005, it kick-started its operations in August 2006 with the opening up of the first office in Hyderabad. When compared to its competitors like LIC and ICICI Prudential, Bharti AXA can definitely be termed as a late entrant in the insurance sector. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman and Group Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises, commented to the media, “The insurance sector in India provides a mega opportunity for private players like us.

Har program ka main food

Lay’s
Agency : JWT
Baseline : Har program ka main food

Description: Saif Ali Khan is listening to the cricket commentary on his radio when his friends barge in to his terrace. He asks them to watch the match from the terrace itself; being held in a distant stadium and it is barely visible from the terrace. One of his friends, a girl, says that, from all that distance, it seems as though a couple of blue ants are playing tapoo with a few green ones. Then, Saif looks down and whistles; a guy suddenly appears and offers them a bagful of Lays chips and Saif says, Yehi to hai is programme ka main food.

4ps take: With the cricket World Cup round the corner, Lays is betting big on cricket fever. This communication is all about how even you can’t be physically present for the matches – taking place in faraway West Indies – yet you can at least have Lays and have a blast! Saif Ali Khan, of course, shines again with an enthusiastic performance. The clinching benefits to the Brand are the rocking taste of Lays and the various flavours offered. The single-minded focus is to maintain as well as increase the popularity of the product after the launch of Lays Stax. Featured as the heart of any programme, what do we say but that ‘munching Lays definitely pays’?
